Abstract

The non-literary Sinitic languages used in pre-modern Korea were the language of Chan Buddhism and the Neo-Confucian recorded sayings, the language of the popular Chinese novels, the liwen åæ, or clerksâ documentary language, and the language of the zhijie ç´è§£, or direct translations of the Classics. Each language had a different role and they were largely compartmentalized. These languages as used in Korea had considerable colloquial Chinese components, and in some cases contributed to the formation of hybrid Sino-Korean written languages. This article examines these non-literary Sinitic languages and concludes that they do not fit into Pollockâs classifications of âcosmopolitan vernacularsâ or âcosmopolitan literary languagesâ but lay somewhere in between. I have called these languages a âsecondary/specialized cosmopolitan languageâ or âcosmopolitan koinÃ©.â
