Abstract

In this chapter I provide a description of how a reflexive tool, heuristic, was developed and used in a teacher education course. Narrative accounts illuminate the shifts made in teachers’ views, values and understandings on the importance of responding to their cognitive and emotional mathematical needs. Learning from this research, I argue that the use of these responsive math teaching heuristics encourages teachers to become aware of and regulate their emotional responses to math teaching and learning as they interact in the classroom environment and as such, that these heuristics should be embedded in teacher education courses.
