Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine ways in which a background in the fine arts may impact teachers’ selection of instructional practices and overall sense of self-efficacy. Various types of strategies selected by the participants were analyzed in order to consider why certain decisions were made and how these decisions impacted teachers’ overall pedagogy. The study provided key ways in which the fine arts could guide best practices to support students facing trauma in their lives and provided educators with a variety of fine art strategies to support their students. The researcher utilized a qualitative approach for data collection. Methods included personal, informal interviews with teachers, direct observations, analysis of lesson plans, and open-ended surveys. Key findings related to research suggest that a fine arts background does influence the teachers’ sense of self-efficacy in the selection of instructional strategies. In addition, results indicated how teachers’ ways of fostering creativity of students, while developing critical thinking skills, was influenced by their background in the fine arts. These results provided ways in which the fine arts could aid educators in developing nurturing, creative environments in which every child may develop healthily and safely.
