Abstract

Family literacy intervention programs (FLIPS) take place in home settings and aim to promote children’s success in the school environment. This chapter describes a qualitative study conducted at a Canadian FLIP site where most participants were newcomers. The study focuses primarily on home visitors. Home visitors are parents who have completed the program themselves and are employed to teach others how to do the program through a weekly home visit. Through Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of the rhizome and Masny’s Multiple Literacies Theory, the study explores the ways in which home visitors engage in a variety of literacy practices with participating families, including that of second language teaching and learning. Reconceptualizing home visiting as space for experimentations in rhizo-teaching presents the opportunity to think differently about how literacies and second language acquisition in the context of FLIPS function and what they might produce.
