Abstract

This chapter emerges from an experimentation with Deleuzian-thinking and the experiences of international students in an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program. It draws on the Deleuzian concepts of assemblage, affect, and becoming to explore the relationality between language learning, plagiarism, and digitally-mediated source-based writing. In doing so, it takes the view that digitally-mediated source-based writing is a complex issue: an entanglement of students with their linguistic, academic, and educational backgrounds and skills; the target language; course instructor; course requirements; and the specifics of the writing tasks, including topic, source texts, use of digital tools, academic regulations, and assessment criteria. Through experimentation with Deleuzian-thinking as students use technological tools and resources to compose a source-based paper in the privacy of their homes, the concept of virtual plagiarism emerges. Virtual plagiarism ruptures traditional approaches to plagiarism research and problematizes its treatment in the EAP classroom.
