Abstract

Higher education TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) contexts are dynamic due to individual, collective, and institutional changes created by transnational and global student movement. This chapter examines one such context by drawing on Deleuzo-Guattarian conceptualizations of desire and affect, and on post-qualitative methodologies. Conversations with graduates of a Teaching English as an Additional Language Master’s program designed for international students at a Canadian university form a cartography of desire and affect. It maps the molecular movements and disruptive lines of flight of these graduates within various performative contexts and assemblages, as the molar institutionalized coding of their subjectivity is interrupted.

The visualization of data, theory, and methods offers possibilities of altering existing representational paradigms, practices, and discourses around international education and students. Becoming other than the attributed representation becomes a deterritorialization of representations of deficit desire or international student as deficient.
