Abstract

Richard FitzRalph’s relationship with the mendicant friars moved from friendly to polemical. On the basis of chapter 9, the view is here challenged of the standard intellectual biography, Katherine Walsh, A Fourteenth-Century Scholar and Primate (Oxford: 1981), that his anti-mendicant stance was a product of Irish conditions. The premiss is rather that FitzRalph on taking up his Irish archbishopric found what he had been conditioned to seek and to treat severely when found. There is ground for thinking that the second-hand nature of the perspective is discernible in the future polemicist’s progress to the position or positions that he later advanced so vigorously that he has come to be regarded as having engendered rather than absorbed the outlook that gave rise to his emergence as the friars’ critic. The re-examination of his evolution demonstrates that FitzRalph has a more convincing claim to originality in his radical recasting of the ideology of poverty than in his initial opposition to the friars’ pastoral privileges. The established view that in face of the legal position his campaign was doomed to failure is also challenged, on the basis both of new evidence and of a detailed reinterpretation of existing evidence for its progress.
