Abstract

One of the more influential parts of FitzRalph’s Lectura was his so-called Tractatus de Imagine Trinitatis, identified here as being in fact, Q. 6., as well as three further questions associated with the topics dealt with here, namely, the relationship among intellect, memory, and will, the role of species, illumination theory, and the role of the agent intellect. FitzRalph’s text is, in fact, an exploration of contemporary rational psychology and how the parts of the mind as manifested in its acts are interrelated. Here as elsewhere, the dialogue for FitzRalph is with Aquinas, Henry of Ghent, and Duns Scotus. However, rather than being simply a restatement of traditional themes, FitzRalph shows himself capable of innovation and a subtle and convincing set of arguments that meant this text was the source of further debate by Holcot, Crathorn, and Wodeham.
