Abstract

The titles of questions in Richard FitzRalph’s Lectura on the Sentences indicate his active involvement in discussions on the concept of the will conducted in the first half of the 14th century. This chapter focuses on FitzRalph’s concept of the activity of the will as conveyed in question 10, article 1, entitled Whether the Will is Active or Passive with Regard to Its Action (Utrum voluntas sit activa respectu suae actionis vel passiva). To start with, I analyze the structure of the article and identify FitzRalph’s most preferred sources. Subsequently, I examine the most interesting arguments he employed to assert the active character of the will and the methodological approach he adopted. Finally, I point out some Scotistic sources of his thought in order to argue that FitzRalph took a strong voluntarist stance in the debate and to conclude that his arguments and analytical tools portray him as a representative Oxonian physics-oriented theologian.
