Abstract

This chapter explores the development of FitzRalph’s understanding of beatitude from the lectures on the Sentences to the Summa de quaestionibus Armenorum. FitzRalph’s treatment of beatitude in the commentary on the Sentences demonstrates the influence of the Boethian-Anselmian compositional model. In the Summa, however, the analysis is focused on the interpretation of St Paul’s rapture episode and is concerned primarily with the doctrinal issue of whether the blessed see God’s essence in heaven rather than with the various senses of beatitude.
