Abstract

This chapter explores the contributions of FitzRalph, Wodeham, and Holcot to the medieval scholastic debate about the scientific character of theology at the intersection of faith, grace, and merit. We demonstrate FitzRalph’s competence as a commentator on the Sentences of Peter Lombard and contrast his cautious and Augustine-influenced approach to traditional theological questions with the more adventurous theological methodology of Wodeham and Holcot.
