Abstract

In this paper, I analyze the concept of actual infinities as presented by Richard Kilvington and Richard FitzRalph. According to Annelise Maier, there was “a little controversy” between the two thinkers who later worked closely together against the Mendicant Friars. They both took an active part in discussions about the most popular theological and philosophical problems concerning continuity, time, and infinity. Although both willingly reach for the arguments of St Augustine, John Duns Scotus, and William of Ockham they use them to reach the opposite conclusions. Both Richards not only have different views on the possibility of the existence of actual infinity, but above all, their method of practicing philosophy and theology is different. For Kilvington, the correct method is mathematics and terministic logic, for FitzRalph it is logic above all.
