Abstract

This chapter focuses on the United Nations’ activity related to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. This universal international organization has played a key role in this field, contributing outstandingly to the creation and progressive development of the international law of the sea. Throughout the last decades, the six main bodies of the United Nations have played an important function in this field, although it is considered that the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Secretariat – through the activity of its Secretary-General –, and the International Court of Justice are the most relevant in this regard. The contribution of the General Assembly is undoubtedly noteworthy, although the 1982 Convention has not given it any special role in this regard.
