This chapter analyses the rise of fascist modes of thinking in the United States of America by tracing the rise of degenerate family studies until the so-called eugenics craze, which was exemplified by the forced sterilisation of Carrie Buck in 1927. Forced sterilisations and state-sanctioned violence mark the United States, a democracy, as a particularly interesting test case in the rise of fascist ideology. Degenerate family studies was an academic discipline which sought to trace the imagined degradation of human evolution seen amongst poor white folks, especially in the American South. This discipline also produced the gendered notion that the womb was a site of extreme danger which could be tempered with the scientific solution of mass sterilisation. Thus, degenerate family studies combined the intersections of gender, class, and race and contributed to the rise of fascist ideology during the eugenics craze in the United States. This chapter examines the ways in which white supremacist ideologies go beyond the designations of mere phenotype, but also include and conjoin aspects of gender, class, and other forms of discrimination to constitute their object of suppression and control.
