To what extent can photographs serve as a source for the historical reappraisal of the connection between Nazi ideology and gender? Illustrated magazines proved to be an effective propaganda tool for the Nazi regime, especially in their portrayal of thoroughly attractive men going to war to protect beautiful young women against enemies portrayed as criminals. Entertainment, personal everyday experiences, and ideological persuasion were cleverly combined within features that carried the pictorial motifs of muscular men, athletic women, and bare skin. Depictions of private (love) relationships were thus connected to the war of mass extermination: a conjured danger to the life and limb of loved ones by Jews, British, or Bolsheviks was repeatedly followed in the magazines by a call for self-defence, which was not bound by any laws of war. I analyse the pictorial worlds published in German illustrated magazines between 1939 and 1945 and discuss how photographs served less to reflect realities but to draw attention to what was to become in the future. The analysis provides an immanent critique of ideology that takes into account the ambiguities, ambivalences, and contradictions inherent in the images, elucidating their functions within the narratives about violence and gender published in the illustrated magazines.
