Acknowledgements
This volume, Gendering Fascism, is a product of the collaborative effort and support of numerous individuals and institutions. First and foremost, we extend our gratitude to the German Research Foundation (DFG) for the financial support provided for the research project ‘Gendering Fascism: Visual Propaganda in Wartime Japan’ (Project no.: AOBJ 647689). The foundation of this book lies in the insightful presentations and discussions that took place during the DFG-sponsored online workshops titled ‘Gendering Fascism: Imaginaries, Media, Technologies’ (29/30 July 2021) and ‘Gendering Fascism: Organizations, Bodies, Representations’ (11/12 November 2021). The papers at these workshops form the backbone of most chapters in this volume. Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to all the participants who enriched the workshops with their perspectives and expertise.
We are grateful for the dedicated student assistants at the Institute for Modern Japanese Studies at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, who played a vital role in the smooth execution of the book project. We thank Annika Clasen, Marie Ulrich, and Julian Witzorky for their support during the organisation of the workshops and early stages of editing. Special thanks go to Thurid Pia Fink for her tireless communication with all authors, for keeping our work structured, and for her excellent command of the formal intricacies of such a volume.
We also thank the anonymous referees from Brill for their insightful comments and invaluable suggestions on the chapters; Alessandra Giliberto for patiently navigating us through the publishing process; and Dr. Tim Barnwell for his accommodating service and excellent copy-editing work.
Finally, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all our colleagues, friends, and families, who supported the creation of this compilation in various other ways. The responsibility for any mistakes that may remain lies with the editors.
