This introduction to the compiled volume Gendering Fascism (co-edited by A. Germer and J. Rückert) discusses various definitions and trajectories of fascism, including new geographical and transnational approaches to fascism. Whereas research into the gendered histories of women and men under fascism have gained purchase in recent decades, the category of gender remains under-represented in theory-building within fascism studies. This chapter gives an overview of and connects the central findings in the compiled essays, arguing that fascism is developed, produced, and conceived in profoundly gendered ways. Drawing, among others, on Teresa de Lauretis’s concept of ‘technologies of gender’ (1987) that denotes social knowledges and political tools which work through institutions and on the individual, this chapter suggests that fascism can be understood as another social, cultural, and political ‘technology’ that co-constitutes the outcomes of gendered fascisms. In this theoretical framework, gender and fascism are not separate and isolated phenomena, but are deeply intertwined—so much so, in fact—that one cannot be fully undone without undoing the other. Lastly, this chapter discusses fascism with Hannah Arendt (1962) as one form of totalitarianism, in which particular gender ideologies served as gateways to people’s lives, imaginations, and beliefs.
