Abstract

The book chapter highlights the use of concept maps as a tool in understanding how science concepts are understood by learners and how scientific misconceptions can be identified. In addition, the theory of concept development from a Vygotskian perspective is explained with newfound evidence to support it provided by recent neuroscience research findings. Lastly, the role of memorization and its benefits on cognitive development from MRI brain scan evidence is presented from a non-Western point of view, using memorization of the Quran as an example.
