In-season nitrogen (N) status is an essential indicator of crop vigour and a predictor of subsequent grain yield and quality, underscoring the significance of estimating in-season crop N requirement for effective N management. UAV-based multispectral imaging and machine learning was integrated to assess in-season N status in maize and spring barley. Random forest (RF) showed the highest accuracy for predicting N uptake and aboveground dry matter in maize (D-index: 0.93 and 0.90) and N concentration in spring barley (D-index: 0.91) during early and late growth stages, respectively. These findings emphasize the significance of growth stage-specific N monitoring to optimize N use efficiency and improve crop quality.
