The aim of this study was to demonstrate the potential of combining an RTK mobile receiver, enabling centimetre-level positioning, and an optical sensor delivering 18 spectral bands from 410 nm to 940 nm, all encapsulated in a 3D-printed shell. The prototype, built at low cost (> € 500) and called VG-sensor RTK, integrated the data from both sensors. It was tested and validated on an experimental plot where two varieties of durum wheat were grown with three sowing densities and six nitrogen application rates. More than 2000 measurements were acquired over 10 dates on the experimental field, demonstrating the robustness of the sensor. The statistical tests applied to observed NDVI values showed how the VG-sensor RTK could significantly distinguish different vegetative developments due either to different sowing densities or different varieties or nitrogen application methods, and even within individual rows of wheat.
