Abstract

Anatomical characteristics of wood are different among different genera of trees, but it is not usually possible to determine which species of tree the wood represents by examination of the wood micromorphology. In this chapter, the genus is determined by the wood anatomy, and the species designation is taken from the most common species that occurs in the area under investigation. During the course of the investigation of the decay present in the Tumulus MM furniture, vessel elements from the top of table 6 were found to have wall thickenings when viewed with scanning electron microscopy. The woods from which the Tumulus MM furniture and coffin were made are characterized briefly in the chapter, followed by a detailed list of specific samples with their determinations. The floor boards of the tomb chamber were analyzed in the context of the study of the coffin.
