Although there were important publications on insects as food and feed before 2008, it did not lead towards significant initiatives by government authorities or private enterprises. In the coming years there will be an increasing demand on meat proteins by the ever growing world population. However, the land available for livestock is too constrained to satisfy the increasing demand for meat. In addition, the sustainability of products from conventional production animals is questioned. This prompts the search for alternative protein sources. In 2013, a landmark publication entitled ‘Edible insects: future prospects for food and feed security’ caught worldwide attention. The reason for such attention was that it was published by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations and by Wageningen University and Research. The first organization assured global legitimacy and the second academic validity. Enabling conditions at the country level include: (1) a tight collaboration between government, private sector and academic institutions; (2) a strong message that convinces private and public sector of the potential of the endeavour; and (3) an awareness of urgency to find alternative protein sources. Actors at the national and international level can create enabling conditions, also for consumers. Scientific articles, cookbooks, the press, social media, workshops, and conferences all play a role in creating a conducive environment for the sector of insects as food and feed to develop. Such an enabling environment will ensure that the issue of finding novel, sustainable sources of protein will be effectively communicated among all stakeholders.
