Natural enemies (including vertebrate and invertebrate predators, arthropod parasitoids and microorganisms) can be very harmful in insect production systems. We provide an overview of main biological characteristics of significant groups of natural enemies, for example concerning microorganisms and their way to infect insects. Such biological traits will, together with the characteristics of the production systems, be of major importance when analysing which natural enemies can be a problem in a specific production system. Two examples of host insects and their natural enemies are detailed. The first example deals with the red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, and its many different natural enemies. The second example deals with house crickets Acheta domesticus, and its viral pathogens. Finally, we give recommendations on how to manage natural enemies in production systems.
