Abstract

This essay explores the director Simon Stoneâs Phaedra (2023), a production that emerged from a textual lineage crowned by Jean Racineâs PhÃ¨dre. For Stone, making a production of a classic text (or texts) always involves processes of rewriting, relocating (both geographically and historically) and, usually, the renaming of characters. Such processes were emphatically operative throughout his Phaedra which ran at the UKâs National Theatre in 2023, advertised as âa new play by Simon Stone after Euripides, Seneca, and Racineâ. This essay explores the extent to which Stoneâs directorial approach is rooted in his memories and habits of reading canonical texts, particularly Racineâs. Drawing on debates in critical theory about the relationship between âsurfaceâ and âsymptomaticâ reading, the discussion focuses on Stoneâs rewriting of the character of Ånone, ânourrice et confidente de PhÃ¨dreâ. It does this in dialogue with Elizabeth Freemanâs work on the relationship between reading, care, and performance.
