Abstract

Racineâs IphigÃ©nie was first performed in August 1674 in the Orangerie at Versailles in a setting very different from that of the HÃ´tel de Bourgogne in Paris, where it was performed a few months later and for whose stage Racine had primarily constructed the text of his play. This chapter attempts to recreate what can be known of the dÃ©cor in which the play was staged at the HÃ´tel de Bourgogne, recognizing that IphigÃ©nie seems to pose more problems in this respect than some of Racineâs other plays. The two most obvious authoritative statements about the original dÃ©cor seem to be in conflict: Racine says that the action takes place in King Agamemnonâs tent; the notes of the stage designer at the HÃ´tel de Bourgogne seem to suggest that the decor was rather a military encampment with tents and ships. Yet it is possible to reconcile these statements and to suggest the likely configuration of the stage decor and its access points. Such a reconstruction allows us to trace the entrances and exits of characters and to identify some theatrical effects that would otherwise remain hidden.
