Abstract

This chapter explores Racineâs annotations of Homerâs Iliad in relation to his IphigÃ©nie, arguing that the pencil markings in particular, as the earliest layer of these annotations, provide important evidence of his responses to the characters of Agamemnon and Achilles, beginning some years before he would recreate these in his own play. It explores how the annotations suggest Racineâs identification of issues of flawed leadership, pride, and tragic blindness or error in the Homeric presentation of the two men, and relates this early reading of their story to his own portrayals when he later came to compose IphigÃ©nie. This evidence of Racineâs Homeric reading also illuminates key tragic dynamics in IphigÃ©nie, in particular the interface with the Iliadic future, and its further consequences.
