That several different versions of the myth of Iphigenia at Aulis circulated in the ancient world is testimony to the difficulty which was felt about the ethics, psychology, and theodicy of the scenario of Agamemnonâs sacrifice of his daughter. The present essay analyses the ending of Racineâs play in the light of the contrasting forms of closure offered in their respective plays on the Iphigenia story by Euripides, by Jean de Rotrou, and by Michel Le Clerc, each of whom provides a different solution to the theatrical, emotional, and moral questions raised by the scenario of Iphigenia at Aulis.
