This chapter does a great deal of the heavy lifting required to put in place the conceptual foundations on which this treatise is built. It explains that a mongrel is of mixed origin, a crossbreed or a hybrid. Dogs of mixed or unknown breeding are frequently called mongrels. In doing this, it decries that this potent term has been unjustly made a slur and starts to frame this ‘conceptual expedition’ that seeks to recover the term from its abuse by misanthropes and advance new grounds for granting everyone worth. The chapter delimits and maps the scope of Mongrelisation, explaining that racism will be purposively focused on, though it is clear that mongrelisation stands against other injustices, such as those based on gender and religion.
