Abstract

This chapter explores the rationale of undertaking the hunt which is directly related to âhigherâ political and social welfare-related aims such as dispensation of justice, and ensuring fairness of taxation laws and agricultural reforms. The hunting expedition was often the strategic pretext to move thousands of troops into restive areas to monitor possible sedition without arousing undue alarm, as hunting techniques such as the battue hunt often approximated that of war. The shikÄrgÄh thus became a venue for military training, reconnaissance operations, overt intimidation of enemies, and launching armed attacks.
