Abstract

This chapter is a broad exploration of the hunting practices of the ancients of Mesopotamia and Persia, early Islamic, and ancient Indian traditions of hunting. The survey traces the origins, typology, functions, and experiences of the ancient Persian pairidaÄza (paradise) hunting park, its evolution over the ages, and its widespread influence. The ancient Indian Gupta-era writers such as KÄlidÄsa who have written extensively on the ethos of the royal hunt, the elephant science of Kauá¹ilyaâs ArthaÅÄstra, and the decoy hunt and hunting with cheetahs which are mentioned in the MÄnasollÄsa are also discussed. The significant developments during the reign of the pre-Mughal Sultanate and its practice of building a variety of waterworks that served a dual purpose of aiding agriculture and attracting game for the chase are also explored. The chapter also highlights the universal symbolic features and common character of the imperial hunt that transcended time and territory.
