Abstract

This chapter is an introductory overview of the multifaceted nature of the Mughal hunt as a distinctive imperial institution that embraced all aspects of Mughal court life, and extended hunting tours and encampment of the vast mobile court-camp. Used as a means to publicly display the inherent qualities of kingship, such as bravery and martial prowess, the hunt also enabled the rulers to project supremacy over man and beast in the extensive territories they governed. While the emperorâs hunt was considered a vital aspect of imperial society, the shikÄrgÄh, or hunting ground, was conceived as more than just the landscape that contained the hunt. It had its own interfacing and pivotal roles to play in reflecting and even shaping the political, social, cultural, and spiritual life of the Mughal elites and the populace. It was a site of ancestral evocation of their ancient Persian forebears and their illustrious legacy of hunting, and a space from which to pledge allegiance to their Timurid ancestry and its inherent implications of political legitimacy. While political, cultural, and environmental factors may have produced the shikÄrgÄh, it was the hunting landscape that helped redefine relationships between the human protagonists such as the imperial hunters, farmers, pastoralists, and non-elite specialist animal handlers. The shikÄrgÄh was also a conciliatory zone that linked the hunting culture with the contested spaces of agricultural lands, grazing fields, and forests.
