Abstract

Maoist communism sought not only external obedience but also the transformation of individualsâ inner beliefs. After the establishment of the Peopleâs Republic of China in 1949, religious figures were subjected to political surveillance, reeducation, and reassignment to serve the partyâs goals. However, few reliable records have been available to reconstruct this history, as survivors of Maoâs regime often avoided discussing their experiences. This chapter analyzes a rare discovery of 101 pages of official archives from 1962 to 1965 about Zhibei æºæ² (1906â?), a Buddhist monk of middle strata from Liaoning province. These documents include Zhibeiâs study reports, personal reflections, critiques from others, and evaluations from authorities. During the Socialist Education Campaign in the 1960s, Zhibei was encouraged to âopen his heart to the Party,â documenting his struggles to reconcile his religious beliefs with political demands. His writings reveal his effort to align with the party while grappling with internal conflicts. Through the case of Zhibei, the chapter examines the limits of religious belief under the intense ideological pressure of a totalitarian regime.
