Abstract

Forms of Buddhist teaching and preaching in modern and contemporary China have received little attention from scholars. Filling a gap in scholarship, the present study aims, in the first place, at bringing attention to the genre of Buddhist sermons called kaishi éç¤º (âreligious instructionâ) as an important modern form of Buddhist teaching in China. I will tentatively define this genre and try to identify its functions and main characteristics. In the second place, this study will consider the relevance of kaishi as a source of biographical and autobiographical information in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. As I hope to show, thank to their unpolished and less ritualized nature, kaishi allow for a more intimate expression of the Buddhist self than other forms of Buddhist teachings, including the standardized biographical and autobiographical tradition. Therefore, they represent a valuable source to look at the intimate side of religious life, and to glimpse the inner world and individual personality of Buddhist figures in their historical contexts.
