Abstract

The essay explores the theme of intergenerational teacher-student relations in representations of eighteenth-century Gelukpa masters. By focusing on biographical, liturgical and eulogical texts and images surrounding the reincarnate lamas Tukwan Lobzang Chökyi Nyima (1737–1802) the Changkya Rölpé Dorjé (1717–1786), as well as the latter’s imperial patron and disciple, the Qing Qianlong emperor (1711–1799), I highlight a relational sense of the individual that is informed by connections across successive rebirths. Biographies portray the cultivation and fulfilment of cross-generational exchange between teachers and disciples, while other ritual and devotional sources reinforce the same language of interdependence. By attending to these de-centering narratives of the individual across overlapping genres of the Qing Gelukpa Buddhist world, I show that the intimacy of teacher-discipleship and the recognition of past lives were celebrated as integral to the individual’s spiritual and political accomplishments.
