Abstract

The quote by Paul Hawken: “The first rule of sustainability is to align with natural forces, or at least not try to defy them” is particularly relevant to food. In a world with a population exceeding 8 billion and projected to reach 10 billion by 2050, the imperative of ensuring food security, equitable access and environmental sustainability is more pressing than ever. Historically, despite lower population numbers, achieving such a vision has been elusive with stark inequalities in wealth distribution and access to essential resources hindering global food distribution. Today, these challenges are compounded by unsustainable agricultural practices, food waste and regulatory discrepancies that exacerbate food insecurity and environmental degradation. The global food system’s inefficiencies, particularly the unnecessary transportation and waste of resources, contribute to environmental damage. Moreover, varying food safety regulations often result in the destruction of edible food, intensifying hunger and malnutrition, particularly in vulnerable populations. These regulatory differences, often shaped by media-driven perceptions or interest group agendas rather than scientific evidence, impede efforts to create a more just and sustainable food system. By aligning human well-being, planetary health and regulatory frameworks, we can build sustainable food systems that ensure equitable access to nutrition and protect the environment for future generations.
