In the autumn of 1937, an exhibition of Italian women artists, curated by Italian artist Natalia Mola (1891–1981), was shown in Finland and Estonia. Based on archival research, this chapter revisits the exhibition, by presenting the negotiation of gender in Fascist Italy’s art world in the context of fascist cultural policy. The Italian Fascist regime controlled culture through interpreting it in the fascist frame and by fascistising cultural institutions. An official hierarchical system, related to professional organisations, was instituted to regulate exhibitions both at home and abroad, as exhibitions were considered important tools in building internal consensus and in expanding Italian influence internationally. In this fascist politics of display, women were marginally included in collective art exhibitions, and even less in those taken abroad. Instead, separate women’s exhibitions were organised by the National Fascist Syndicate of Women Artists and Graduates. The system both enhanced women’s possibilities for showing their work and put them on the margins by separating them from male colleagues. The chapter shows how Mola, although not belonging to the inner power networks of the fascist regime, could bypass official channels, obtain financial support, and take the women’s exhibition to northern Europe as an official show despite the opposition of some Italian governmental actors, such as the powerful new Ministry of Popular Culture. The chapter argues that an essential reason for her success was that a women’s exhibition was not deemed important, not even for promoting Italy.
