The Legionary Movement, known also as ‘Legion of the Archangel Michael’ and ‘Iron Guard’, was founded by Corneliu Zelea Codreanu (1899–1938) in 1927 and became a crucial actor in the Romanian inter-war political arena. Renowned and studied as one of the major far-right, fascistic, and anti-Semitic parties of the inter-war era, the gendered dimensions of the Movement’s membership and ideology have only recently become the object of deeper inquiry. This chapter analyses the Movement’s discourses on gender through the lens of personal relationships. Particular focus lies on the legionary concept of ‘family’, in which gendered dimensions and political underpinnings were intertwined. The legionary ideology pursued not only a ‘politicisation’ of family networks, but aimed to transform and redefine the idea of family itself. Different models of families coexisted within the Movement, ranging from more ‘traditional’ nuclear families based on marriage to extended groups in which spiritual and political relations transcended and enriched biological forms of kinship. A composite array of ‘family portraits’ emerges from the analysis of legionary press, ideological writings, photographs, and other sources. The choice of family as the object of analysis may thus offer a deeper understanding of the constitutive role of gender in fascist discourses and practices.
