Citations of Ficinoâs Commentary on Plotinusâ Enneads are made according to the treatise (enneadic) number of Porphyryâs and Ficinoâs editions of Plotinus together with the paragraph number (in bold) of Gershâs edition of Ficino. For example, VI. 1. 2 corresponds to the second paragraph of Ficinoâs commentary on Plotinusâ treatise VI. 1. Ficinoâs text makes a frequent but irregular use of headings that sometimes form a title for designated chapters but sometimes simply divide longer segments of commentary. In the present volume, the form VI. 1. 2 indicates a chapter together with its heading, whereas the form VI. 1. 2 ti indicates the heading itself. Some further conventions apply to the paragraph numbering not only because the chapter numbering is sometimes confused in the original Renaissance edition but also because the modern edition by Gersh has so far been published only in part. In this case, (1) paragraphing of the commentary on Enneads IIIâIV is in accordance with Gershâs published edition; (2) paragraphing of the commentary on Enneads VâVI is identical with the chapter numbering in all the earlier editions (to be retained in Gershâs edition); (3) paragraphing of Enneads IâII is in accordance with Gershâs forthcoming edition. Because the last item is not yet available, a concordance between the paragraphing and the pagination of the most easily accessible Ficini Opera Omnia (Basel 1576) edition has been supplied at the end of this volume.
