Abstract

Researchers argue that adult and non-formal education in Nigeria has failed to reflect the needs of adult learners in helping them to resolve contemporary life challenges, leading to high attrition rates across adult and non-formal schools throughout the country. This research argues that to sustain an adult’s interest in learning, adopting a social approach to literacy, embedded in the social-cultural aspirations of adult learners is imperative, as it helps them to develop the necessary skills needed to resolve everyday life challenges. Therefore, using a case study design, this research aims to explore the extent to which the teaching of Home Management (former), particularly its Cookery component, in comparison with Home Economics (current) takes cognisance of the socio-cultural context of Hausa Muslim women in Kano state, and to determine which is best positioned to help them resolve contemporary life challenges.
