Abstract

Historically, women are said to be the âbearers of cultureâ in many societies. The education of women is therefore imperative for the development of a better future community. In Islam, the education of women and men is treated equally. Though it is deemed important, education is still gendered. It is argued that there is a huge literacy gap between men and women in developing countries, especially in the Middle East. This chapter highlights the situations of Middle Easternâ s womenâs education, the reasons behind such circumstances, and the impacts of womenâs education have on the economy, society and individuals. Instances are drawn from the comparison between two Middle East countries: Jordan and Algeria. The analysis will be based on the countriesâ fulfilment of UNESCO CONFINTEA V Hamburg Declaration Agenda for the Future (1997). Assumed patriarchal values, colonisation and economic constrained, are found to impede the education of older women. Conversely, women make up more than half of the university population which was due to efforts made by both countriesâ governments to increase womenâs access to tertiary education. Albeit being contentious, the plans have met the CONFINTEAâs aspiration to promote womenâs opportunities in education. Although womenâs participation in Jordan and Algeria saw a tremendous increment, the outcomes are somewhat paradoxical. The disparity between the number of graduates and those who are working is apparent. Oversimplified perceptions on biased cultural norms fail to see the multidimensional facets that encompass womenâs decision in making independent choices. Lastly, education for women was emancipative and empowering through which they realise their spiritual need and become agents for social change, hence influencing their families and societies in the long run.
