Abstract

The meaning of being a woman is frequently defined in opposition to what characterises being a man inside the gender spectrum. The behavioural and psychological differences between them that are assumed as being biological have been rooted in social constructions overtime. These constructs regulated by gender norms benefit male sovereignty and push women into subservience. There is empirical data on how most western societies socialise women to foster characteristics such as expressing their feelings and being dependent on others and to take on activities that demand low cognitive processes. However, women are not all the same and do not face the same challenges and oppressions everywhere. The third wave of the feminist movement exposed the previous waves’ conception of a woman as someone from an upper-middle class, heterosexual and white. That enabled discussions around the marginalisation of different sexualities, social classes and ethnicities. In light of these trends, this chapter seeks to highlight the significance of intersectionality when addressing women in the domain of adult education.
