Abstract

Some aspects of skeleton biomineralization and mineral bioaccumulation in the serpulid Pomatoceros triqueter were investigated by cytological, histochemical and biophysical methods, and compared with similar observations on other polychaetes. A mineral component similar to the well-known calcified material of serpulid tubes was found in the cement of Alvinella pompejana, Sabellaria alveolata and pectinariids; it always contained phosphorus, calcium, magnesium and iron. Setae of P. triqueter contained small amounts of iron and calcium associated with the halogenated (I, Br) proteinaceous cortex of the chitinous framework; calcium and iron were also present in various concentrations in setae of Nephtys hombergii, S. alveolata and pectinariids. Phosphorus-rich calcium sphaerocrystals were abundant in the midgut epithelium of Pomatoceros in association with iron; they were even more abundant in this tissue in N. hombergü and also occurred in S. alveolata.

The nephridial inclusions of P. triqueter, Pectinaria koreni and Sabellaria alveolata contained the same components, but in association with other metals and metalloids. Zinc, bromine and vanadium were present in P. triqueter, with vanadium being concentrated in the peripheral cells. Chloragosomes of the hemopoietic organs in the heart bodies of P. koreni and in the chloragogenous tissue of P. triqueter contained a large amount of iron; this was in association with phosphorus and calcium and was in the form of polylysosomes with typical ferritin inclusions.
