Abstract

The terebellid genus Scionella, erected for S. japonica Moore, 1903, from Japan, is briefly reviewed. S. vinogradovi (Uschakov, 1955) is redescribed from types and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies of previously unpublished nontype material; the SEM studies show the notosetae to be of two types, a feature not mentioned in the original description. The holotype of S. estevanica Berkeley & Berkeley, 1942 has been examined; the species is herein redescribed and referred to Pista Malmgren, 1866, new combination; it is close to P. cristata (O. F. Müller, 1776). The affinities of P. lornensis (Pearson, 1969), originally described as a species of Scionella, are briefly commented; also this species is a member of the P. cristata species-complex. Neither P. lornensis nor P. estevanica have the most characteristic morphological feature of Scionella: the large oblique plaque formed by the well developed lateral lappets of segments I-IV. Scionella papillosa Tourtellotte & Kritzler, 1988, from the Gulf of Mexico, is provisionally referred to Pista, new combination, and its taxonomic position is commented. The species appears to be a member of the P. cristata complex and will be treated in more detail elsewhere. The genus Scionella thus presently appears to contain only two known species: S. japonica and S. vinogradovi.
