Abstract

Representatives of the polychaete genus Sphaerosyllis are characteristic inhabitants of the interstitial and crevice environments. The papillated body accumulates debris which frequently masks internal morphology as well as surface features. The prostomium bears fused palps which are very plastic in the living animal and contract in a wide variety of configurations upon preservation. Retraction of the prostomium into the tentacular segment is influenced by the nature and location of the nuchal organs and affects the relationship of the antennae to one another as well as the eye localization. The presence or absence of a dorsal cirrus on the second setiger, shape of acicula, eye pattern, location and nature of the nuchal organs, shape of antennae and cirri, and body surface on which eggs are brooded delimit three groups of species. Within the groups, species differ in various features including setation; nature of body, prostomial, and parapodial papulation; and pharyngeal characteristics including position of the tooth in the pharynx. The presence or absence of parapodial glands and the type of contents of those glands are inadequately reported but appear to belong with the group characteristics rather than being species characters. A few previously reported species which were examined have been reidentified. Sphaerosyllis longicauda of Perkins (1981) is renamed Sphaerosyllis perkinsi n. sp.
