Abstract

Four species of Nephtys (N caeca, N. cirrosa, N. hombergii and N. longosetosa) occur intertidally in the British Isles. The reproductive cycles of these species have been investigated from analyses of gonad development at a number of sites in England, Scotland and in western France. The geographical range of each species has been determined from published records.

Nephtys caeca and N. longosetosa are arctic/boreal species, reaching the southern limits of their distribution in Great Britain. Both breed in northern England in early spring, but the more northerly species, N. longosetosa, breeds in January whereas N. caeca breeds in April. Nephtys cirrosa is more temperate, reaching the northern limit of its range in northern Britain. It breeds in October in southwestern Scotland and exhibits spawning failures in northeastern England, but breeds in spring in western France. Nephtys hombergii also breeds unpredictably in northern Britain.

The observed patterns of reproduction are related to environmental conditions in the central parts of the range of each species; marginal populations exhibit occasional reproductive failures.
