Abstract

The relationship between bathymetrie and geographic distributions of invertebrates is a key source of information helping to better understand the zoogeography of the present oceans. The Bay of Biscay (43°30’ N to 48°30’ N) in the northeast Atlantic Ocean belongs to the medium temperate subprovince and constitutes a very interesting site where temperate and warm faunas can meet at the same latitude but at different depths and climatic conditions. The zoogeographic distribution is illustrated by the Onuphidae, the taxonomy of which has recently been detailed.

This extensive shelf is geomorphologically diversified, particularly on the northern part (Armorican) in opposition to the southern part (Aquitanian), and all the biosedimentary communities are distributed on an edaphic and climatic double scale. Abyssal and bathyal populations have been compared with shelf populations and a clear continuity has been found between the bathyal populations and those of the outer part of the continental shelf. The bathyal constitutes a rich reserve of fauna which can spread over the abyssal plains and the continental shelf. In the latter, the reduced number of onuphid species near the coast might be related to greater climatic fluctuations. On the other hand, warm-water species reach their northern limit in the shallower (infralittoral) part of the shelf. This makes it possible to present a threefold scheme for the colonization of the shelf.
