Abstract

Data on distribution and species composition of deep-sea trench polychaetes are presented. 174 samples from 152 stations from 26 deep-sea trenches of the World Ocean were studied and found to comprise over 120 species of polychaetes belonging to 70 genera and 32 families.

The bathymetric and geographic distribution of the polychaetes inhabiting these trenches is discussed. About 40% of all trench species mainly occur in the abyssal zone. About 30% of the ultraabyssal species are endemic to this zone; approximately half of these are restricted to a single trench, whereas the others inhabit two or more trenches, including ones that are widely separated.

Several groups of species with different types of distribution in the World Ocean are defined. The trenches from different trophic regions of the World Ocean are classified.
