Abstract

In this article, some general considerations on retranslations are drawn by taking the Italian versions of the novel De arme edelman [The Poor Gentleman], written in 1851 by the Flemish author Hendrik Conscience, as a case study. Recent research has brought to light several unknown Italian editions of this nineteenth century Romantic author. His ruralistic-pauperistic novel, De arme edelman, appears to be the most (re)translated of all his work, resulting in nine editions from 1855 through 1967. This case study allows, therefore, for a long-term reconstruction of Conscienceâs reception in Italy, where he was first categorised as a middle-brow, commercial author and later became a favourite of Catholic publishers. De arme edelman confirms these general considerations about Conscienceâs reception in Italy but also offers a chance to question why this novel in particular received so many retranslations, an honour usually reserved to high-brow, canonized authors. It seems that the commercial (and, therefore, short-lasting) editions of Conscience required a regular update, not only to appeal to new groups of readers (such as young female readers in the twentieth century), but probably also to compensate a limited circulation of previous translations, often produced by typographers or publishers that did not operate at a national level. Moreover, five out of the nine Italian (re)translations contain images in one form or another, an aspect which requires a more specific analysis in order to understand how Conscience was retranslated not only in words but sometimes also in images.
