Abstract

As mental health issues skyrocket, there is compelling need for a pedagogy of compassion and care. Anxiety and depression are fuelled by a grade-driven context devoid of human connection, authenticity, and deeper meaning. Mindful curriculum can rehumanize the educational process as schools become places of expansion that focus on being present and paying attention to what touches the heart. As both a teacher-educator and practicing classroom teacher who values interconnectivity, authenticity, and a sense of community, I feel compelled to challenge traditional ideologies around literature studies, curriculum, and learning. My reflections on teaching Huxley’s Brave New World in a high achieving high school are developed through poetic auto/ethnographical narrative. Utilizing reflective praxis, I contemplate and challenge, exploring new space for individual and collective growth, deeper understanding of culture and context and most significantly portals for human discovery and development as we embrace the process of humanizing education.
