Abstract

What happens when a teenager faces pregnancy, high school still to be completed? With fierce determination some enter the Shirley Schneider Support Centre, a school for teenage mothers. There are no periods, no bells, no announcements on the speaker systems. Deadlines are fluid, and assignments are custom designed. They talk when they want, they smoke when they need, and they sing lullabies to their babies when it feels right. It is a curriculum built on compassion, community, and determination. Working with program graduates, we play with poetry, movement dialogue, and laughter and together infuse a community of shared truths around notions of isolation, belonging, principles, and values. Through three different perspectives, we uncover a bold and radical world where bitter toughness meets fierce love and how attentive curriculum fosters agency in the most unexpected ways.
